Basic Skills Wrap-up

One of my personal learning goals was to become a more responsible consumer of media, so I decided to make a graphic out of the “basic skills” Mike Caulfield described to always use when consuming media. Making this graphic helped me spend more time and thought on these steps, and I plan to keep it on my desktop as a reminder to go through these steps whenever I consume media. I highly suggest practicing these skills and even just reading and writing them down a few times to get more familiar with them. I’ve found these steps to be really helpful, especially when I read something that causes some kind of emotional reaction. I think the first step to improving skills in media consumption are just to be more intentional about it. This graphic and remembering these skills have been really helpful to me, but I’d love to hear if others have other helpful tips for responsible media consumption!
